The title alone gives you a warning that Neil Young's latest isn't going to be an easy listening experience. This isn't Young as a folkie, nor is it the distorted rock 'n' roller who hangs out with Crazy Horse -- this is a whole different Young, one armed with just a guitar, his well-worn warble and a studio of effects.

The title alone gives you a warning that Neil Young’s latest isn’t going to be an easy listening experience. This isn’t Young as a folkie, nor is it the distorted rock ‘n’ roller who hangs out with Crazy Horse — this is a whole different Young, one armed with just a guitar, his well-worn warble and a studio of effects.

The eight tracks on Le Noise are filled with looped vocals, layers of guitars, fuzz, drone and echo all manipulated by producer Daniel Lanois. Underneath the mayhem is a brutally honest album with Young laying his soul bare. On Love and War, one of two acoustic tracks, he admits, “When I sing about love and war/I don’t really know what I’m saying.” Hitchhiker, originally written in the early 1990s, is an autobiographical tune that takes us on a walk down memory lane, from becoming famous to what drugs he used to deal with it. Walk With Me shows off his romantic side, along with Sign of Love, about with his 32-year marriage. Rumblin’ finishes things off on an ominous note as Young looks at climate change.

The experimental nature of the music doesn’t mean he’s forgotten about melodies, because no matter what Lanois is doing, he and Young understand the hook is king and Le Noise if full of them. 4 stars

Fust sisters reunite as Bisons’ campaign gets set for tip-off

Izzi Fust is in a better place.

Don’t get it twisted; this isn’t an obituary, far from it. The standout third-year forward feels as lively on a basketball court as she has in years.

After spending the first two years of her university career with the Regina Cougars, Fust returned home this summer and is gearing up for her first season with the Manitoba Bisons.

Her homecoming came one year after older sister Kyu made the jump from Regina to Manitoba.

Selkirk got an extra dose of lights, cameras and action this weekend.

And ribbon cutting — for the grand reopening of the city’s sole theatre.

“It’s fantastic,” Mayor Larry Johannson said. “The sky’s the limit.”

The Garry Theatre now operates under a non-profit charity. It’s been closed since 2021, when Landmark Cinemas left the city.

Calling it “intimate partner terror,” a judge sentenced a Winnipeg man to seven-and-a-half years in prison for firing a loaded handgun held to his partner’s head causing her life-altering injuries.

The woman, who the Free Press is only identifying as A.W., watched as Machuor Akau sat silently and stared at the ground as Manitoba Judge Sidney Lerner read his ruling Monday.

Akau, 28, who pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, possession of a prohibited weapon, pointing a firearm and criminal negligence causing bodily harm, didn’t speak during the sentencing or look at his victim or her family members as court progressed.

At a previous proceeding, Crown prosecutor Ari Millo had requested a sentence of eight years, while defence counsel Saul Simmonds argued for between five and six.

Salvation Army calls on Winnipeggers to donate merchandise as sales soar

Kelly-Anne Riess 4 minute read Yesterday at 2:01 AM CDT

The Salvation Army is taking donated merchandise from other regions to stock its Winnipeg thrift stores as increasing sales outpace local donations.

Retail activity at the charity’s eight Winnipeg locations grew more than 10 per cent year over year during several months, from January through April, and again in June.

Although local donations remain strong, they haven’t kept pace with demand, prompting the organization to supplement inventory with merchandise from elsewhere.

Ted Troughton, managing director of the Salvation Army’s thrift store operations, said rising living costs are bringing in new customers.
