"Smart people SLEEP LATE" read the headline on winnipegfreepress.com. This interested me, as I wake up before 4am every weekday morning, and just a little later on the weekends. I consider myself smart, so I took exception to this.

Opinion

Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 04/11/2010 (5668 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.

“Smart people SLEEP LATE” read the headline on winnipegfreepress.com. This interested me, as I wake up before 4am every weekday morning, and just a little later on the weekends. I consider myself smart, so I took exception to this.

The study and article went on to inform me that “People with higher IQ’s (intelligence quotients) tend to be more active nocturnally, going to bed later, whereas those with lower IQ’s usually retire to bed sooner after nightfall”. If that is true, then perhaps the wording of the headline should have read “Smart people SLEEP LATE, and they’re also not that succesful”.

I don’t know one person I consider to be a massive success that sleeps late. Maybe P. Diddy? Not sure what time he gets up. All the good doctors, surgeons, farmers, good parents, CEO’s and teachers I know are up early. I’m not sure what line of work you’re in or what you’re doing with your super high IQ if you’re getting up around the same time The View is starting on TV.

I don’t want to discredit the findings of the smart folks at the London School of Economics and Political Science who produced the study, but in the report they noted that “People who prefer to go to bed early, and who are early-risers, demonstrate “morningness,” whereas those whose sleep patterns are shifted later demonstrate “eveningness.” Seriously? Those are the two best words you could come up with to demonstrate a scientific finding? I’m out man. You lost me. I may get up early, and therefore have a lower IQ, but I’m quite certain I could come up with cooler sounding words. There are no sayings about late birds getting some sort of way better tasting worm.
