Remembrance Day is a statutory holiday in Canada, and the Remembrance Day Act permits malls and shop to only be open Thursday afternoon.
Shops, movies, theatres, exhibits and sports events must be closed between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Essential services remain open. That includes hospital workers, firefighters and police.
The day honours the nation’s war dead, our veterans and the forces serving now.
Most provincial, federal and municipal government services take the holiday. Garbage pick-up and recycling will be bumped back a day on the five-day schedule.
Winnipeg Transit is on the Sunday schedule.
Also closed are city animal services, libraries, leisure centres and all swimming pools with the exception of the Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex (999 Sargent Ave.) which is open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
