MORRIS – Manitoba’s Terry McNamee staged a late ends comeback against Prince Edward Island to improve to 4-0 at the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship here Monday.
Trailing PEI’s Robert Campbell 5-3, McNamee turned the tide in the ninth end. First, the Brandon skip made a perfect raised takeout to lie 2. And then, after Campbell flashed a takeout attempt with his last rock of the end, McNamee drew the eight foot for a three-ender and a 6-5 lead.
Campbell had a chance to tie the game in the 10th end with a short tap to the four-foot but the 1989 Canadian Mixed champion elected instead to go for the win and attempt a triple takeout. The effort failed, McNamee stole two and Manitoba improved to a perfect 4-0. PEI is 3-1.
With an 11-7 loss by New Brunswick to Alberta on the afternoon draw, New Brunswick fell to 4-1 and Manitoba is now the last undefeated team remaining in the 12-team field heading into Monday evening.
“We let that one get away from us a little bit,” said Campbell.
McNamee, on the other hand, was buoyed by Monday’s victory over PEI. “I don’t think we were at our best and we still won,” McNamee said. “That’s a good sign.”
McNamee, supported in Morris by third Lana Hunter, second Allan Lawn and lead Lisa Blixhavn, plays BC on the 6:30 p.m. draw Monday evening. BC’s Tom Buchy is 1-2 heading into that draw.
