WINNIPEG – Another $8 million has been raised for the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, bringing the total for private donations to $125 million.

Stuart Clark, a Calgary entrepreneur and former Winnipegger, contributed another $1 million to the museum today, following a recent tour of the museum site at The Forks. Clark has dontated a total of $4 million to the museum.

“Human rights issues are worthy of our time, effort, and financial support to help improve the world we live in,” Clark said at an event today at the Radisson Hotel.  “My passion for the museum developed out of a strong personal feeling that greater exposure and increased knowledge of human rights issues is required to improve our own quality of life.”

Friends of the Candian Museum for Human Rights (Friends) has raised $8 million since September, including Clark’s donation and plus contributions from other private-sector donors such as Meyers Norris Penney and Boston Pizza.

Gail Asper, the national campaign chair of Friends, thanked Clark and the other donors, saying it’s helped bring the project closer to its estimated financial goal of $310 million. $25 million is still needed, officials said.

Asper revealed a picture of a future room in the museum that will dedicated to Clark – The Stuart Clark Garden of Contemplation.

“Stu Clark really gets what this project is about – it’s about the difference that we can make,” said Asper. “It’s nice to know we’re all doing our little part to achieve that beautiful goal.”

Construction on the museum is expected to be complete in 2012.
