Winnipeg lawyer Harry Walsh is among 12 new officers of the Order of Canada announced today in the New Year lists of awards from the Governor General.
David Johnston, Canada’s new Governor General announced a total of 54 new appointments to the Order of Canada.
The new appointees include 12 officers and 42 members.
Recipients will be invited to the Governor General’s official residence, Rideau Hall, to accept their insignia at a ceremony to be held at a later date.
Walsh was honoured for his dedication to criminal law in Canada for more than 70 years, and for his advocacy against the use of capital punishment, the announcement stated.
The Order of Canada is one of our country’s highest civilian honours, established in 1967 to recognize a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to community and service to the nation. More than 5, 000 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order.
