CTV Winnipeg continues to dominate local TV-news ratings, according to figures released Tuesday by the Bureau of Broadcast Measurement.

The fall 2010 ratings show CTV’s supper hour newscast attracted an average of 129,000 viewers between 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., compared to 42,600 for Global’s local news program and 27,600 for the final half-hour of CBC’s three-part daily newscast.

In the same ratings period a year earlier, CTV averaged 130,100 viewers, compared to 37,900 for Global and 33,800 for CBC.

CTV’s supper-hour show also drew an average of 113,300 viewers in its second half-hour (6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.), compared to 117,000 in fall 2009 ratings.

CBC had an audience of 38,100 for the first segment of its local news (5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.) and 39,000 for the second half-hour (5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.), an increase over average viewerships of 28,500 (5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.) and 32,900 (5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.) a year earlier.

Fall BBM measurements took place during four weeks in late October and November of last year. Audience numbers represent total viewership (all ages) in the extended Winnipeg market.

Deaths, injuries as fire hits Alberta military base: McGuinty

Fakiha Baig, The Canadian Press 4 minute read Updated: 2:17 AM CDT

WAINWRIGHT - Defence Minister David McGuinty says there have been deaths and injuries after a fire broke out Saturday at a military base in Alberta.

Fire crews scrambled late into the night as fierce winds whipped flames beyond CFB Wainwright, a massive military training base located 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton.

McGuinty, speaking to reporters in Ottawa, confirmed the casualties but had no other details to share, including numbers or what happened.

"I cannot recall such an incident in my short time for sure as a minister, but I cannot recall an incident like this in recent memory,” McGuinty said.

A longtime team official in Manitoba’s hockey community says he’s being punished by the City of Winnipeg for speaking out about the poor condition of one of its rinks.

Barry Bonni, president of the River East Royal Knights, has occupied an office at Terry Sawchuk Memorial Arena for more than four decades.

On Friday, he was locked out.

“They’re on the war path,” Bonni said.

Prior to last Saturday, I was the blissful sort of person who could say “who is that, again?” when I heard the name Shane Gillis.

Now, I know him as the comedian who said “women just dress like whores now” at the gym during his opening monologue on Saturday Night Live — a show that fired him in 2019, by the way, for being racist and homophobic on a podcast yet continues to invite him back as a host for some reason.

Gillis also likened women’s short shorts (the kind one might wear to lift weights, say) to neon fishing lures.

“And don’t look. You’re not allowed to look. For real, don’t look, because they are filming,” he said.

Instead of canola on Friday, there was sod.

But in two years’ time, by current estimates, the bare plot of land in a St. Boniface industrial park will hold canola samples and seeds for testing.

Bayer Canada officially broke ground on a 60,000-square-foot research and development facility Friday morning.

“It’s about bringing new and better innovation to farmers,” said Kacy Perry, Bayer Crop Science Canada’s country division head.

Selkirk got an extra dose of lights, cameras and action this weekend.

And ribbon cutting — for the grand reopening of the city’s sole theatre.

“It’s fantastic,” Mayor Larry Johannson said. “The sky’s the limit.”

The Garry Theatre now operates under a non-profit charity. It’s been closed since 2021, when Landmark Cinemas left the city.

De Havilland calls for national water bomber fleet as it scrambles to meet demand

Christopher Reynolds, The Canadian Press 6 minute read 5:00 AM CDT

MONTREAL - On July 13, a pair of Canadair water bombers touched down on the Seine River, skimming along its surface to refill their water tanks as they battled a wildfire south of Paris.

The "super scoopers," with their signature ketchup-red wing tips on a mustard-yellow body, sucked up 6,000-plus litres from France’s most famous waterway in one go as part of a fight against the flames then rampaging across Europe.

The event in north-central France underscored how wildfires are ranging even farther from their traditional grounds and fuelling an urgent need for water bombers to fend off climate disasters.

The iconic Canadair turboprops serve as the only amphibious firefighting aircraft currently in production built from the outset for that purpose, rather than being retrofitted to douse flames.
