WINNIPEG – A bassoonist from Manitoba has won a $4,000 award of excellence as one of the most advanced musicians accepted into the 2011 National Youth Orchestra of Canada.

Darren Hicks, who is from Winnipeg but lives in Ottawa, was the only Manitoban to win one of the six awards.

Two other Manitobans were accepted into the orchestra: violinist M. Gillian Carrabré, who is from Brandon and lives in Montreal, and trumpet player Michelle Wylie, who is from Winnipeg and lives in Toronto.

Nearly 500 students aged 16 to 28 auditioned for 92 spots in the ensemble.

What Aidan Labao once believed was his greatest limitation is becoming his greatest strength.

The 20-year-old flyweight mixed martial artist recently earned his first amateur fighting victory convincingly at the 72nd running of Rumble in the Cage in Lethbridge, Alta., where he defeated British Columbia’s Joel Miller by technical knockout 52 seconds into the opening round.

The victory was perhaps as much of a shock to Labao as it was to those in attendance, who watched the 5-3 jiu-jitsu specialist from Winnipeg dominate an opponent who stood six inches taller and held a sizeable reach advantage.

Proving himself in that regard is what drives the young fighter.

Sal is officially back with his NHL pals and is eager to get back up to speed.

The Swedish blue-liner made his season debut with the Winnipeg Jets in the Heritage Classic on Sunday in his return from off-season shoulder surgery. And Elias Salomonsson handled himself well despite his return to NHL action coinciding with the spectacle of an outdoor game.

Sure, there was the expected rust to shake off after being limited to two games with the Manitoba Moose last week, but the defenceman was immediately elevated into a second pairing role.

“He showed off his skating and first-pass ability,” said Jets head coach Scott Arniel. “His timing, some contact and practicing at NHL pace will help him get up to speed.”

Air force pays tribute to retiring CC-130H Hercules planes

Royal Canadian Air Force personnel in Winnipeg bid farewell Saturday to the military branch’s last remaining CC-130H Hercules planes — “workhorses” that crews flew in seemingly countless combat, rescue and transport operations.

The federal government is phasing out Canada’s fleet of CC-130H Hercules aircraft, which entered service in 1974, in favour of modern planes, including the CC-295 Kingfisher, which will be used for search-and-rescue operations out of 17 Wing Winnipeg as of November.

“It’s really part of our family and one of us. This was the backbone of a lot of things that we do here out of Winnipeg,” Col. Curtis Wright, commander of 17 Wing Winnipeg, said of the “mighty Herc” after a retirement ceremony and a flypast.

The 435 Transport Search and Rescue Squadron, based at 17 Wing Winnipeg, is the final RCAF unit to fly the CC-130H Hercules. Two Winnipeg-based planes are still being flown. They will be taken out of service Nov. 1 and Nov. 18, Wright said.

A 19-year-old is dead after a collision Saturday in southeastern Manitoba involving a semi-truck and a passenger vehicle.

RCMP officers from the St-Pierre-Jolys detachment received a call at 8 p.m. about a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of highways 23 and 200, located roughly 35 kilometres north of Emerson, a Monday news release said.

A vehicle with five people inside was travelling north on Provincial Road 200 when it hit a semi-truck travelling east on Provincial Trunk Highway 23, police said. The semi-truck jackknifed in the eastbound lane and tipped over into the ditch. The other vehicle landed facing west in a ditch on PTH 23.

A STARS air ambulance was dispatched, police said.

Cabinet minister guilty of ethics violation may have buyer for family business two years after offering to sell

Carol Sanders 2 minute read 6:46 PM CDT

Natural Resources and Indigenous Futures Minister Ian Bushie has a potential buyer for Grandpa George’s gas and convenience store at Hollow Water First Nation after offering it to sell it two years ago when he was found guilty of an ethics violation.

“Grandpa George’s is currently in negotiations with a buyer and that process is ongoing,” Bushie’s press secretary Caedmon Malowany said in a prepared statement Monday.

Bushie held a news conference in 2024 to say he would voluntarily sell the business after he violated provincial ethics rules.

The MLA for Keewatinook, who was not available for an interview Monday, was not required to sell the gas bar after former ethics commissioner Jeffrey Schnoor ruled in September 2024 that Bushie inadvertently violated the new Conflict of Interest (Members and Ministers) Act.

B.C. Conservative’s Lorne Doerkson sets out urgent priorities to govern

Wolfgang Depner, The Canadian Press 6 minute read Updated: 2:12 PM CDT

VANCOUVER - British Columbia's premier-designate Lorne Doerkson's long to-do list includes lowering taxes, while reviewing the provincial finances, working with Alberta and the federal government on the proposed Pacific Link pipeline and repealing Indigenous legislation.

Doerkson laid out his priorities at a news conference Sunday, just hours after his party was elected with about two-thirds of the province's 93 seats in the legislature.

He said he has spoken to the lieutenant-governor and named Kim Henderson, a former deputy to the premier to previous Liberal governments, to lead his transition team.

"We are going to do this properly, and we are going to do it with obviously some urgency," he said. "When this government is sworn in, it will be ready on Day 1, and it will hit the ground running."
