Dogs rescued from flood-affected First Nation

Three puppies and one dog, all strays left homeless in the Peguis flood, are going up for adoption at the Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter.

The animals were given to a group of pet rescue volunteers who were invited to the First Nation when hundreds of people had to evacuate their homes this week, leaving their pets behind.

The Manitoba Emergency Response Team for Animals made the trip to Peguis, 220 kilometres north of Winnipeg, on Thursday.

“We brought up 20 pails of food and then I hip-waded into homes with two other people from Peguis emergency services,” Ciem O’Daly said. “The three of us waded to the evacuated homes to provide food and care to the animals there.”

Peguis volunteers identified three pups and one adult dog as strays and asked the team to find homes for them.

The Manitoba Emergency Response Team for Animals is a volunteer group that answers pleas for help with pets stranded in the flood.

The team is responding to pleas through a provincial hotline called the Animal Care Line, 945-8000.
