If travel points were awarded to canines, Dita and Beyonce could fly for free anywhere. Hey there, time traveller!

If travel points were awarded to canines, Dita and Beyonce could fly for free anywhere. These little pups belong to former Olympic figure skater Burt Lancon and Colleen Munro, finalist for Manitoba Woman Entrepreneur of the Year. The story of these dogs are just as interesting as that of their adopted family.

Like many modern moms and dads, Lancon and Munro are busy. Munro runs Hugh Munro Construction. Lancon is a high-level skating instructor. His job frequently takes him to Los Angeles. When they travel, so does their daughter and dogs. These sweet pups have no qualms about flying. Lancon notes that they love their carriers and enjoy the trip. “Grab their bags and they get excited,” he says.

For these dogs, flying to Los Angeles means they’re going home. Beyonce, a Boston terrier-Doberman cross, was “one of five puppies found in an abandoned house,” says Lancon. Of her litter mates, only two others survived, Pink and Fergie.

As supporters of pet adoption, Lancon and Munro chose Beyonce. She would occasionally socialize at a California dog daycare called Barkingham Palace, where they heard about Dita.

The Los Angeles pound has ties with Barkingham Palace. It informed the operators that they had a small dog that had lost an eye. No one knew how this injury could have occurred although the suspicion was that the pup had been abused.

Because of excess breeding, there is a glut of small dogs in California. The shelters and pounds can’t keep up. Many dogs are euthanized. Lancon didn’t think this special-needs dog would have a great chance at survival. He and Munro had to adopt her.

Dita couldn’t have found a better home. Not only is she adored by her human family, but she and Beyonce “are like sisters,” says Lancon.

He smiles when he reports the family’s 11/2 kilograms of fun has “adapted really well.” Having one eye doesn’t affect her lifestyle. She can sit and beg for what seems like hours and loves to cuddle under the blanket with her face covered. Lancon says she “has taken begging to a new art form.” With that sweet face, who could say no?

Beyonce has her talents, too. Like any terrier-cross worth her salt, “she’s a ratter,” he says.

Munro and Lancon dispel a few accepted notions about dog care. They’ve shown that busy families can find a way to keep their pets happy, healthy and active. And Dita’s situation reveals that all dogs, even those with special needs, can thrive in a family home.

The morning I met with Lancon, Winnipeg had endured another surprise spring snowfall. He must be the only Winnipegger who appreciates the white stuff in April. Even his pups agree with the rest of us. They don’t like the snow and cold. Who could blame these canine dual citizens? Lancon and Munro constructed them a covered winter dog run. They laid down artificial turf and kitty litter over their patio and covered it with plastic. The space remained warm and dry.

Lancon is no fan of backyard breeders. He also feels that “the puppy mill situation is horrible.” It’s why his family adopted.

Many Californians agree. A debate wages over banning puppy sales at pet stores. The hope is that such a prohibition would reduce the number of pets destined for shelters and pounds. It may also put bad breeders out of business. Many inbreed their dogs, increasing the likelihood of offspring possessing inherited diseases.

It is assumed small dogs are rare in shelters. This couple disproves that assumption. Many pups are available at shelters and rescues. And reputable breeders demand their dogs are returned to them for re-adoption if owners are unable to care for them. Beyonce was found on Pet Finders.

Munro and Lancon are ardent supporters of the Winnipeg Humane Society. I had met their daughter, Steele, at a WHS event. You could tell that she adores her pets. When asked about what makes Dita special, Steele Lancon cracks, “She’s a really good winker.”

This was not only a sweet sentiment, but in a way it’s a learning opportunity for us all. She doesn’t see her dog as a one-eyed dog. Instead, Dita’s just the family pet.

The Lancon/Munro family proves that appearances and pet lineage mean little to pet owners. The relationship is what makes every dog special to its family.

Eadie faces crowded field — including former councillor — in bid for fifth term in Mynarski

Malak Abas 8 minute read Yesterday at 6:00 AM CDT

The city’s most crowded council race has a little bit of everything: a long-serving incumbent, a former ward councillor in the 1980s, an unsuccessful candidate in the last municipal election seeking a rematch and three political newcomers.

Mynarski has long been led by Coun. Ross Eadie, who was first elected in 2010 and is seeking his fifth term. Five challengers want the job: Natalie Smith, who ran in the ward in 2022 and came in second, Terry Wachniak, Harold Brazil, Laurie Kozak and Ayaz Noor Mohammed.

It’s the city ward with the largest number of candidates this year.

Eadie describes himself as “a dancer, a singer and a city councillor” who has made inroads on garbage pickup, back-lane cleaning and earning the respect of his fellow council members by being the first Mynarski councillor to be appointed to executive policy committee, the mayor’s inner circle, in decades.

Bombers top B.C. Lions 34-10 to earn playoff spot

Dru Brown saved the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ season.

They were a trainwreck for the opening 40-plus minutes in Vancouver on Friday night before Brown provided the ultimate spark, accounting for 31 consecutive points in a 34-10 victory over the B.C. Lions to clinch a playoff berth.

The Lions — who had nothing to play for and rested a long list of key starters — somehow led 10-3 late in the third quarter when Bombers quarterback Zach Collaros was forced to leave the game. Lions defensive tackle Nathan Cherry was flagged for roughing the passer after driving Collaros into the turf, and the 38-year-old pivot was ruled out shortly thereafter.

And then Brown’s brilliance began.

Woman receives 8½-month sentence for disposal of body

Dean Pritchard 4 minute read 5:04 PM CDT

A Winnipeg woman who helped dispose the body of a slain Mexican man under threat of death from his killers has been ordered to serve another 8½ months in jail.

Devlin Langlois, 25, had pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to murder in the March 2025 killing of 28-year-old Diego Moscoza in a Selkirk Avenue house.

Court of King’s Bench Justice Candace Grammond, in a written ruling delivered Friday, rejected a recommendation by Langlois’s lawyer Joshua Rogala that she be sentenced to the equivalent of nearly 16 months of time served.

Grammond said she accepted that Langlois feared for her life. However, she made no effort to help Moscoza when he was gravely injured and his killers were not present in the home and had not yet threatened her.

Ryan Reynolds wasn’t wearing his Deadpool suit, but that didn’t stop Mayor Scott Gillingham from wanting to talk about films with the Vancouver-born Hollywood movie star.

Reynolds, who appeared at IG Wealth Management's 100th anniversary celebration Wednesday at the RBC Convention Centre, took to social media afterward, sharing a photo of himself with Gillingham and trumpeting the province’s tax incentives.

“An incredible place to shoot,” the Instagram post read.

On Thursday, Gillingham said the actor, best known for portraying an irreverent, erratic anti-hero on the big screen, is a “really nice gentleman.”

Don’t let the final score fool you.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers clinched a playoff berth with a 34-10 victory over the B.C. Lions on Friday night in Vancouver, but it was anything but pretty.

Had they not been facing a lineup loaded with second- and third-stringers, the Bombers might be preparing for the off-season instead of another game right now.

Luckily for them, they survived three horrendous quarters to prevail. A loss would have ended their season and handed a playoff spot to the Calgary Stampeders instead.
