MORE than 350 young feminists from across the country will gather in Winnipeg this weekend for the second RebELLEs Pan-Canadian Young Feminist Gathering.
The three-day, bilingual event at the University of Winnipeg is expected to attract teens and young women from 14 to 35 years of age of diverse political views and cultural backgrounds.
The Winnipeg conference is intended to build on the foundation established with the first RebELLEs gathering in Montreal in 2008.
“We want to make it clear that feminism is alive and kicking,” RebELLEs spokeswoman Jodi Proctor said in a news release announcing the event.
“With the recent attacks on reproductive rights in Canada and the election of a majority Conservative government, the feminist movement is more relevant than ever.”
The conference’s workshops and plenary sessions, which get underway on Saturday, will focus on five action areas: violence again women, anti-racism and decolonization, poverty and anti-capitalism, women and the environment and peace and demilitarization.
Other workshops will include an introduction to feminism, radical cheerleading and reproductive justice.
The RebELLEs Movement describes itself as a national network of feminist collectives and young feminists working to defend women’s rights and to co-ordinate actions to fight sexism, patriarchy, colonialism and capitalism.
