IF you’re looking for an early opportunity to cheer an NHL team in Manitoba before an official NHL game gets played, Don Cherry wants you.

The producers of the film The Don Cherry Story: Keep Your Head Up Kid – The Sequel are looking for volunteer extras to fill seats when the TV miniseries shoots in Winnipeg at the MTS Centre on Thursday, June 2, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and in Portage la Prairie at the PCU Centre on Friday, June 10, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The job does not pay, but the first 200 registered volunteers to arrive at the arena will receive an exclusive commemorative Don Cherry T-shirt, and every registered volunteer who attends the movie shoot will be entered into a grand prize draw.

Because the scenes in the movie are set in the fall and winter, volunteers are asked to dress in seasonally appropriate clothes, and period clothes whenever possible. The game at the MTS Centre is set in 1979 and the game at the PCU Centre is set in 1969. A prize will be awarded for the best outfit on both nights.

Volunteers are asked to register online at www.formstack.com/landing/1189-1081387.

Eadie faces crowded field — including former councillor — in bid for fifth term in Mynarski

Malak Abas 8 minute read Yesterday at 6:00 AM CDT

The city’s most crowded council race has a little bit of everything: a long-serving incumbent, a former ward councillor in the 1980s, an unsuccessful candidate in the last municipal election seeking a rematch and three political newcomers.

Mynarski has long been led by Coun. Ross Eadie, who was first elected in 2010 and is seeking his fifth term. Five challengers want the job: Natalie Smith, who ran in the ward in 2022 and came in second, Terry Wachniak, Harold Brazil, Laurie Kozak and Ayaz Noor Mohammed.

It’s the city ward with the largest number of candidates this year.

Eadie describes himself as “a dancer, a singer and a city councillor” who has made inroads on garbage pickup, back-lane cleaning and earning the respect of his fellow council members by being the first Mynarski councillor to be appointed to executive policy committee, the mayor’s inner circle, in decades.

Sun sets on Hellebuyck era

Ken Wiebe 7 minute read Yesterday at 6:54 PM CDT

Now that the Connor Hellebuyck era of the Jets has finally concluded, what impact will the departure have on the netminder’s legacy?

Well, it’s a complex answer and one that could change with the benefit of time and a side order of sober second thought.

Given how raw things are right now and how things quickly went sideways — with the franchise goalie essentially forcing his way out of town with his trade request back in April — many members of the Winnipeg Jets fan base quickly found themselves at the “good riddance” stage of the grieving process.

This wasn’t how this story was supposed to end and there’s no doubt some feelings have been hurt along the way.

Persistent ex much more than just a pest

Maureen Scurfield 4 minute read Yesterday at 2:00 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I came home alone in my own car after a first date with a great new guy I met through my work. Unfortunately, I found my ex-boyfriend in the driveway of my new rental house. He’d fallen asleep in his car, waiting there.

I just lost it! I banged on his window, and yelled, “What are you doing here? Get out of here, and go home!”

He finally sat up, rubbed his eyes and two minutes later he backed out, yelling crude names at me out the window. Then he took off like a shot!

I found out today that somebody we both know told him I was out on a date. That’s why he was drunk and jealous! I want to get rid of him for good, but now he’s not taking my calls, so I can’t even tell him that and re-ditch him!
