The town of Melita has issued an urgent plea for volunteers to help protect properties threatened by the rising Souris River.
“We’re really short on volunteers,” said town councillor Carol Porter. “We do need them big-time. Today, tomorrow.”
Porter said at present around 30 volunteers are working to shore up dikes in the community. About 10 businesses are currently at risk, she said, as well as Highway 3.
“Water’s up on the deck of the bridge,” Porter said.
