Hey there, time traveller!

WE’RE still No. 1.
Convenience chain king 7-Eleven crowned Manitoba the Slurpee Capital of the World for the 12th year in a row Monday.
Next Monday, the chain will be giving away free small Slurpees for fans across Canada — 1,000 small Slurpees per store.
There are 40 stores in Winnipeg, which means 40,000 free Slurpee drinks are up for grabs July 11.
“The giveaway is one of the largest single-day product giveaways in the country — each 7-Eleven store will be handing out 1,000 free 7.11 ounce Slurpee drinks,” 7-Eleven said in an announcement.
Free drinks marked the national anniversary in previous years and Winnipeg is often called the Slurpee capital. In fact, it’s Manitoba.
Corporate bosses at Slurpee’s 7-Eleven head office presented a Slurpee trophy cup to Winnipeg’s Mayor Sam Katz in 2009 to mark the 10th year we’d slurped our way to the title.
There’s no fanfare this year, although a corporate spokeswoman praised Winnipeg and Manitoba for our love affair.
“Manitoba has consistently won since tracking began and we think Slurpees are part of the culture,” 7-Eleven’s Sheila Dong said from Vancouver.
“We’ve heard how there are Slurpees brought to women in Winnipeg maternity wards, how brides and grooms have stopped in for Slurpees on their way to the reception,” Dong said.
Slurpees are drinks made from freezing soft drinks into a slushy ice that sucks back like an electric knife buzzing through tough meat, a reaction called a brain freeze.
Favourite flavours in Winnipeg are Dr. Pepper, Coca-Cola and Pepsi.
There probably isn’t a soul in the city or the province who hasn’t tried one, or has at least heard of them.
Many say they grew up on them.
Slurpee is a global icon — Googling Slurpee generates more than 3.6 million related search results and there are more than 500 Slurpee-related pages on Facebook, 7-Eleven said.
Worldwide, more than 13 million Slurpees are consumed every month and since 1966, close to 6.5 billion Slurpee drinks have been sold, nearly enough for every person on the planet.
