Hey there, time traveller!

Just call her Diva Delahunty.
Mary Walsh of This Hour Has 22 Minutes and CODCO fame has been signed to play a comical non-singing role in Manitoba Opera’s The Daughter of the Regiment next spring.
The Newfoundland-born Walsh will make her first foray into opera as the Duchess of Krakenthorp in the production of Donizetti’s comedy of manners, April 21, 24 and 27 at the Centennial Concert Hall.
The character, mother of a duke whom the young heroine is pressured to marry, is somewhat like Walsh’s pushy, much-loved TV character Marg Delahunty.
“The Duchess is kind of a cross between Lady Bracknell (from The Importance of Being Earnest) and Marg Delahunty,” said Larry Desrochers, general director of Manitoba Opera. “When we decided to present Daughter, Mary immediately came to mind for this role. She is a consummate comedienne.”
The opera will star former Winnipegger Nikki Einfeld as Marie, the spunky tomboy adopted and raised by a regiment of soldiers.
The celebrity casting could bump up the box office revenue for an organization that recently posted a deficit of more than $100,000 for last season — its first red ink result in 11 years. Subscription and casual ticket sales were both down. The accumulated deficit now stands at $271,956.
Subscriptions to the 2011/12 season, which also features Salome (Nov. 19, 22, and 25) and Dido and Aeneas (Feb. 7 and 8), are on sale at 957-7842. Single tickets go on sale in September.
