GAME BALLS:
OFFENCE
Bombers receiver Clarence Denmark turned in his best game as a pro, catching five balls for 101 yards — many of the difficult variety. The rookie also rushed the ball one time for 15 yards.
DEFENCE
Everyone wearing Blue and Gold gets this one. Three interceptions, a pass rush that got stronger as the game wore on, and no points against in the second half. Edmonton’s lone score was a safety conceded by Winnipeg. That against one of the top offences in the league.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Edmonton K Damon Duval earns a mention for his directional punting Friday, hitting several beautiful kicks that left Bombers returners with no chance for big gains. One booming punt in the third quarter went out of bounds at the one-inch line. Impressive.
FAN-O-METER:
As Winnipeg QB Buck Pierce pulled the ball down and scampered 48 yards for a touchdown, many of the 29,533 fans in attendance were screaming for him to slide. He didn’t, and he rumbled off the Bombers’ longest run of the season.
BY THE NUMBERS:
3
The number of times Edmonton QB Ricky Ray was intercepted by the Bombers defence. Through the first five games of the season, Ray had been picked one time.
1987
The last time the Bombers started a season with a 5-1 record.
0, 4
The number of sacks Winnipeg had in the first half, measured against the number of sacks they put on Ray in the second 30 minutes. The Bombers have a league-leading 25 sacks this year.
