Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive end Kenny Mainor has gone home to Georgia following the death of a grandparent and is is unlikely to play in this Saturday’s game against the Eskimos in Edmonton.

Bombers head coach Paul LaPolice said Wednesday afternoon that Mainor returned home earlier this week and it is unclear whether he will return in time to play against the Eskimos.

Mainor platoons in and out of one defensive end position with fellow lineman Fernand Kashama and Jason Vega, while CFL sack leader Odell Willis anchors the other side of the Bombers defensive line.

If Mainor cannot return, expect to see import defensive end Quentin Davie — a 6-4, 240-pound product out of Northwestern — to be activated from the practice roster.

In addition to Mainor, defensive backs Johnny Sears and Alex Suber and defensive lineman Don Oramasionwu and Rodney Fritz also didn’t practise on Wednesday.

LaPolice said Suber, Oramasionwu and Sears are all expected to return to practice at Canad Inns Stadium on Thursday.

The Bombers are scheduled to travel to Edmonton on Friday in advance of Saturday evening’s game. However, the players are booked to fly to Edmonton on Air Canada, which is being threatened by a flight attendant strike that could begin as early as 12:01 a.m. on Thursday.

It’s not yet clear what effect, if any, a flight attendant strike might have on the Bombers’ travel plans.

Meanwhile, the Bombers announced this morning that they have released import quarterback Adam Froman. Froman was released on the same day as the CFL’s trading deadline. The trade wires have been quiet across the league today and the Bombers are not expected to make any moves prior to this afternoon’s deadline.
