Maple Leaf Foods is announcing an $85-million expansion to its Winnipeg prepared meats facility and the creation of hundreds of new jobs in the city.

The plant at Lagimodiere Boulevard and Marion Street employs 926 people and was already the recipient of $35 million in upgrades two years ago. The expansion will create 345 new jobs at the plant, which will become the largest bacon processing facility in Canada.

It is also the company’s “centre of excellence” for ham boning and value added ham products, producing about 20 million kilograms of processed hams annually.

Today’s announcement is part of a $560-million investment Maple Leaf Foods is making across its network to establish a world-class prepared meats operation.

Overall, Maple Leaf Foods is cutting 1,550 jobs as it closes plants and consolidates its distribution business as part of a three-year restructuring.

The Toronto-based maker of processed meats and other foods says the changes are expected to improve its competitiveness and profitability in the near and longer terms.

Maple Leaf will close processing plants in Kitchener, Hamilton and Toronto in Ontario; in North Battleford, Sask.; Moncton, N.B.; and a small facility at 140 Panet Road in Winnipeg by the end of 2014. The Panet Road plant, which produces Hot Rods, employs 27.

The company says the restructuring will create 1,150 new jobs but the associated plant closings will more than offset that, resulting in a net loss of 1,550 positions from among its 21,000 employees.

Maple Leaf says it will build a new prepared meats facility in Hamilton, Ont., and will also invest in plants in Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Brampton, Ont.

The company will also close four of its distribution centres — in Moncton, N.B., Burlington, Ont., Kitchener, Ont., and Coquitlam, B.C. — consolidating distribution for Eastern Canada in a new facility in Ontario and using an existing facility in Saskatoon as its Western Canadian hub.
