Morning kiddie matinees are being revived at Cineplex theatres Saturday, Oct. 22.

And they’re free.

Cineplex’s first National Community Day will facilitate free screenings of family-friendly films at all five Cineplex theatres in Winnipeg, including Polo Park, St. Vital, Kildonan Place, Cinema City Northgate and Cinema City McGillivray.

The films being screened include Yogi Bear, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1, Green Lantern, Happy Feet, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole and Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. and screenings begin between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Regular-sized popcorn and soft drinks as well as select candy items will be sold at the reduced price of $2 each. Specially designed Starlight pins will also be sold for $2.

The proceeds from sales will go towards the Starlight Children’s Foundation, a national, non-profit organization that strives to improve the quality of life for seriously ill children and their families with entertainment, education and other family activities to help these children cope with the pain, fear and isolation of an illness.

The community-appreciation events will be staffed by Cineplex volunteers and the films have been donated by Warner Bros. Canada.

Alberta’s gopher museum closed until further notice as owners find new facility

Daniela Germano, The Canadian Press 3 minute read Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026

A quirky Alberta roadside attraction that has delighted travellers for decades with its stuffed rodents in tiny costumes is closed until further notice.

The World Famous Gopher Hole Museum, located in Torrington, a hamlet about 120 kilometres north of Calgary, made the announcement online earlier this week.

Laural Kurta, museum director, said she was forced to close the doors because the two historical buildings that house the exhibits need to be replaced.

"We have done every patch repair, staple, spackle, everything we could possibly do, and it is just at its end," Kurta said in an interview Tuesday.

Manitoba spends, what comes next?

Rafiq Andani 4 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

Whatever Manitobans think of this government’s health-care record, its willingness to spend is impressive. The promise to rebuild care has inspired a massive mobilization of public money.

Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care spending reached $9.66 billion in 2025-26. Next year’s budget allocates $10.59 billion, an almost 10 per cent increase above last year’s actual spending, following increases of approximately 5.6 and 6.8 per cent in the preceding years. The government has found room for another $931 million in a single year.

That allocation stands roughly $2 billion above spending in 2023-24, the year the government changed, and represents an increase of nearly one-quarter. At $10.59 billion, the budget amounts to approximately $29 million a day.

Let’s consider the province’s reported additions and funding commitments:
