WINNIPEG – And they called it puppy love.

This afternoon, pop singing sensation Justin Bieber stopped in at D’Arcy’s ARC with his girlfriend Selena Gomez. He left his jacket — and she might have left with a pup.

Owner D’Arcy Johnston said Bieber’s handlers came into the shop Friday afternoon to “ask permission” for the boy wonder and his popstar “besty” to come inside for a visit.

“I thought they were joking,” said Johnston, who promised to respect their privacy and wouldn’t comment about the details of their visit.

“They seemed happy they got to visit some animals,” he said.

Right now, the shelter has 30 dogs and 150 cats. Johnston wouldn’t confirm rumours that Gomez took a puppy from the Animal Rescue Centre. He did say that the famous couple seemed to be more dog lovers than cat fans.

“It was nice to meet them. They’re nice kids,” he said.

Bieber forgot his jacket, said Johnston, who was waiting to hear from his handlers about it.

In the meantime, he doesn’t think their visit or the publicity from it will help with adoptions at the no-kill shelter. But that’s OK, he said: “I’m so pleased they made us a place to stop on the tour.”

Earlier today, Bieber took Gomez, to one of Canadians’ favourite hangouts, showing up at a downtown Tim Hortons.

The celebrity couple didn’t need to stand in line at the ticket booth when they wanted to watch a movie in Winnipeg Thursday night: They rented an entire theatre for themselves.

The pair snuck into SilverCity Polo Park Cinemas early Thursday evening to enjoy a private screening in Theatre #1, according to theatre staff who asked not to be named.

They had pizza (cheese only) delivered to their theatre while they watched Real Steel, which is billed as “a gritty white-knuckle action ride set in the near future, where the sport of boxing has gone hi-tech.”

Patrons in other theatres at the multi-screen facility seemed unaware the famous couple was in a neighbouring theatre, and the mood inside the lobby was as routinely quiet as any weekday evening. A black Lincoln SUV with a female driver waited outside SilverCity on the north side.

“I had a great day here in Winnipeg. I can’t wait to see y’all tomorrow!!” Gomez tweeted about 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

“Feels good to be back in #Canada — missed home,” Bieber had tweeted a couple of hours earlier.

The teen pop sensation was in Winnipeg for a concert Friday night at the MTS Centre.

Gomez is expected to be treated to more than just a movie and pizza while in the city.

A source said Thursday Bieber hopes to take Gomez skating and then to an NHL hockey game. The pair is lining up tickets to the Saturday night Jets game versus the Carolina Hurricanes, the source said.

Earlier on Thursday at The Forks, visitors were surprised when Bieber and Gomez showed up for a stroll. The pair pulled up in a limo around 1:30 p.m., according to observers, and spent a short time walking outside. They were later spotted noshing at a downtown restaurant.

“There was certainly a buzz going around,” said Forks COO Paul Jordan, though he heard for the most part, visitors respected the pair’s privacy.

Though there was no obvious sign of them at The Forks by 3 p.m., Gomez and Bieber left a few packs of tweens scouring the site for a glimpse of the megastars.

Bieber, by the way, has a bona fide Winnipeg connection: his father Jeremy lived here, and Bieber and his father were once spotted at a Manitoba Moose game.

From Lars-Erik Sjoberg to Thomas Steen to Viggo Bjorck, there’s no shortage of Swedish athletes who have quickly become fan favourites here in Winnipeg.

Daniel Svard is hoping to add his name to the growing list.

Although he wields a golf club and not a hockey stick, the 23-year-old from Stockholm is opening plenty of eyes this week at Elmhurst. He carries a two-shot lead into Sunday’s final round of the Manitoba Open, looking to close out his first professional victory in his just his fourth career tournament.

Svard fired a six-under 66 on Saturday to move to 14-under through 54 holes of the PGA Tour Americas event.

Quick quotes: Here’s what people are saying about the Canada-U.S. trade negotiations

OTTAWA - The United States imposed 50 per cent tariffs on billions of dollars worth of Canadian exports Saturday, after the two countries failed to reach a new trade deal before an extended deadline imposed by President Donald Trump earlier in the week.

In response, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Canada will retaliate with matching dollar-for-dollar tariffs. Carney also suspended talks with the United States and summoned his negotiators back to Ottawa.

Here's what people are saying in response:

Wooed by wood, Cedarella founder takes pride in handcrafted designs

Marina Bulan is the founder of Cedarella, a two-year-old venture that turns out eye-catching wood products such as jewelry, kitchen decor, children’s toys and, most recently, metre-high outdoor planters that double as home street-number indicators.

Ahead of immigrating to Winnipeg a decade ago from their native Russia, Bulan and her partner thought it would be prudent to conduct some research on their soon-to-be new home, a city they knew next to nothing about.

Imagine their surprise as they were viewing the 2007 surrealist film My Winnipeg, which comically blends historical facts about our burg with what Winnipeg-born writer/director Guy Maddin has termed “mystical hypothesizing.”

(For instance, there is no proof that, as reported in the award-winning flick, Winnipeg is the sleepwalking capital of the world, and that residents keep keys to their former abodes on their person in the event they turn up there during a bout of somnambulism.)

Unresolved issues leave little space for you

Maureen Scurfield 5 minute read Yesterday at 2:00 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My boyfriend — who is newly divorced — has two great children from his marriage. Although he and I have been together since Christmas, it’s obvious he loves his kids much more than he loves me! For instance, he lavishes affection on the kids when they’re over and completely leaves me out. I’m just the cook and dish-washer for the night.

When I brought this up recently, he said, “My girlfriends don’t last, because if I’m openly affectionate with them, the kids tell their mother we’re making out in front of them! They want all my affection and attention when I’m with them.” Then he added, “Stick around, and the kids will probably loosen up.”

Stick around? The explanation and his “advice” totally turned me off. What do you think?

Canada vows dollar-for-dollar tariff retaliation, suspends trade talks with U.S.

Catherine Morrison, The Canadian Press 7 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 8:27 AM CDT

OTTAWA - A last-ditch effort to reach a new trade deal before a midnight tariff deadline failed Friday, as Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended talks with the United States and summoned his negotiators back to Ottawa.

The decision meant new 50 per cent tariffs on billions of dollars in Canadian exports to the U.S. took effect at 12:01 a.m., and Carney vowed Canada would retaliate with equal measures of its own.

"In recent weeks, we made important progress toward improving Canada's position as having the best deal in the world with the U.S.," Carney said in a statement just before Trump's tariff deadline.

"However, that progress has not been enough to meet our objectives for Canadians."

Wait times for MRIs getting worse in Brandon, Dauphin

Rylee Gerrard 4 minute read Yesterday at 2:01 AM CDT

BRANDON — Wait times for MRI scans have surged in the Prairie Mountain Health region during the last two years.

Despite a campaign promise by the NDP in September 2023 to increase the number of allied health professionals capable of administering diagnostic imaging in northern and rural areas, wait times for MRIs have increased dramatically in Brandon and Dauphin.

Median imaging wait times tripled at Dauphin Regional Health Centre between 2024 and 2026, increasing from eight to 24 weeks, according to the province’s wait time dashboard.

The Brandon Regional Health Centre median wait times for MRI scans more than doubled during the same period, from nine to 23 weeks.
