Without question, Jovon Johnson is the most outstanding player on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers this season.
For the second time in his Bombers career, defensive back was voted the club’s Most Outstanding Player, as the CFL announced the individual team nominees for the “Most Outstanding” awards Wednesday morning. Johnson was also named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player and the Most Outstanding Special Teams Player — the second straight year he’s won that individual award.
Johnson, who celebrated his 28th birthday Wednesday, previously earned the Most Outstanding Player nomination back in 2009. He has a CFL-leading seven interceptions (two returned for touchdowns) and has picked up 517 yards on punt returns this season.
Winnipeg’s Most Outstanding Canadian nominee is sophomore Cory Watson.
The 27-year-old receiver from Montreal established himself as quarterback Buck Pierce’s go-to guy early in the season, catching 65 passes for 757 yards and a touchdown.
Offensive lineman Brendon LaBatte, 25, was the choice the Bombers’ Most Outstanding Lineman — the third straight year he’s earned the honour. The Regina-product was the club’s starting left guard most of the season, before moving over to the centre position the last couple weeks.
Receiver Clarence Denmark was the unanimous choice for the Most Outstanding Rookie. The 26-year-old from Jacksonville, Fla. has 60 catches for 764 yards (good for second on the club) and four touchdowns. He’s had some kick return opportunities for the Bombers, as well.
Seven members of the local media and head coach Paul LaPolice voted on the Bomber nominees. The four Winnipeg players will now go up against the rest of the East division nominee in their specific categories in the next round of voting this weekend.
The Bombers (10-7) travel to Calgary at the end of the work week to face the Stampeders (10-7) Saturday afternoon. Though Winnipeg hasn’t won at McMahon Stadium since October 2002, a slump-breaking victory would automatically give the Blue and Gold first place in the East division and a first round bye in the playoffs.
Should the Bombers clinch first place they would host the East final Nov. 20.
