JASON Jaffray wasn’t the only former Manitoba Moose returning to the MTS Centre on Monday.

Speedy centre Ryan Shannon of the Tampa Bay Lightning was back in Winnipeg for his first game at the downtown arena since he was a member of AHL’s Moose for half a season in 2007-08.

He said Monday morning that he’s kept his eye on the NHL story here.

“I was really happy for the people I still knew that were in the organization, the equipment and training staff, and I heard that Jaff (Jaffray) got called up,” Shannon said. “I see Mike Keane’s jersey in the rafters.

“That was a fun team. It’s good to see that the organization got rewarded for doing all the right things. It should be a fun atmosphere tonight.”

Shannon played 13 games for the Moose because of injury issues that season and also spent about half the campaign in the NHL with the Vancouver Canucks. After that year, the Canucks traded him to Ottawa.

After three seasons with the Sens, he landed with the Lightning as a free-agent signing last summer.

He moved to a strong team that hasn’t gotten off to the best of starts, especially on the road, where the Lightning were 3-5-2 away from the St. Pete Times Forum heading into the first of their three games at the MTS Centre Monday night.

“We just need to stick to our game plan, bring our home game on the road, figuring out ways to do that,” Shannon said.

Have the Lightning been less aggressive away from home?

“It appears so,” Shannon said.

The 28-year-old from Darien, Conn., engaged the expected question on Monday about the Lightning’s 1-3-1 defensive system, a subject that’s been a hot topic for debate since a game against the Philadelphia Flyers last week.

He suggested the issue might be slightly overblown.

“We come up with a game plan, we stick to it and try to do it to the best of our ability. I think our success has less to do with whatever system we’re doing and more about determination and we’ll be working on that tonight,” Shannon said.
