At the age of 19, Dominique McCann should have had a long life ahead of her.

Instead, her family is looking for answers after the woman’s bruised body was discovered in a home on the 400 block of Selkirk Avenue early Friday morning.

Winnipeg police confirm homicide detectives are investigating the case — the city’s 37th homicide of 2011.

Family members say they received a call that morning from a woman they knew. She said Dominique had allegedly suffered an overdose and was lying on a couch.

On Monday, police said officers responded to a medical call Friday at about 6:30 a.m. The woman was rushed to hospital in critical condition. She later died.

Police said the woman had suffered “severe upper-body injuries” but they didn’t release other details about her death.

No arrests have been made.

On Tuesday, visibly shaken family members talked about a young woman with so much promise, who won’t be coming home again.

“Nobody deserves to die like this,” said Adeline Nippi, Dominique’s mother.

“She was trying to live her life. She was going to school, and I encouraged her (to) do anything she set her mind to.”

Dominique was attending classes at Children of the Earth High School, her mother said.

Adeline Nippi was by the side of Dominique’s grandmother, Stella Nippi, at the West End apartment Dominique and her grandmother called home.

They’d moved in just days before the tragedy.

Stella Nippi said she last saw Dominique at the apartment late Wednesday night, just before the young woman borrowed the apartment keys so she could go out for the night.

“It’s a shock to everyone,” said Georgina Cote, Dominique’s aunt.

“I feel that she was a victim and she needs justice.

“Nobody’s going to speak up for her, but she’s gone now, and as a family, I think we have a right to do that for her.”

Investigators are seeking information from the public that might help track McCann’s whereabouts between Wednesday, Nov. 30 and Friday, Dec. 2.

She was last seen wearing a black, waist-length parka with a fur collar, blue jeans and black runners. She also wore a black- and yellow-striped sweater. She’d had her hair streaked.

Anyone with information is asked to call the homicide unit at 986-6508, or Crime Stoppers at 786-8477 (TIPS).
