The big picture
CALL it an opportunity lost — big time — for the Winnipeg Jets.
Still staring up at a Eastern Conference playoff spot, the Jets served up a sloppy effort in a 1-0 loss to the Caps that they’ll curse at season’s end if they miss the playoffs. With Montreal losing to Philadelphia and New Jersey and Buffalo idle, the Jets missed a glorious chance to leapfrog above that magical eighth-place line.
The loss also ends a five-game winning streak at home.
The little picture
THE Jets were a miserable 0-for-5 on the power play and in a game this tight, that was critical. Too much fancy stickhandling and not enough clogging the front of the net and looking for a workmanlike goal with the extra man cost them.
Game breaker
A turnover in the neutral zone led to the game’s only goal as Marcus Johansson dropped to Alex Ovechkin, who beat Ondrej Pavelec with just 74 second left in the game.

The Jets continue their current six-game homestand with what should be one of the highlights of the season — a visit from Teemu Selanne and the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday, 6 p.m. (CBC/TSN Sports Radio).
