At the MTS Centre
Big picture
Winnipeg’s seventh win of December helped push the team to a high-water mark for the season — into a tie for eighth place in the NHL’s Eastern Conference with 37 points. The smaller matter of revenge for Montreal’s win here on opening night wasn’t lost on some spectators, either.
Little picture
The Jets did what needs to be done when an opponent has had the challenge of playing on the previous night, then traveling. Winnipeg jumped to a lead before four minutes were played, then added a second goal in the first period to set the tone for the night. Those goals were thanks to some crisp and clever passing, while Blake Wheeler’s second of the night was a shot off the rush in the first minute of the second period. Montreal has now lost five straight.
Game-breaker
Wheeler gets our nod. He buried the first goal where it had to go, high, after Habs goalie Carey Price made a fantastic early save a few moments earlier. Then he beat Price with the Jets’ third goal early in the second, sparking his team and causing Montreal heads and hopes to sink. He also set up Tim Stapleton’s late goal with a wonderful short pass from behind the net.
