Disciplinary hearing centres on teacher’s 15-second hug with student

Maggie Macintosh 4 minute read Yesterday at 10:08 PM CDT

School security camera footage of a nearly 15-second hug between a teacher and one of her students was repeatedly screened and scrutinized at a historic hearing.

“This isn’t a fleeting or a casual embrace. The two were comfortable with each other,” teacher commissioner lawyer Tristan Sandulak told a professional disciplinary panel on Tuesday.

Sandulak made a case for cancelling Janice Wen Ying Ma’s teaching certificate, citing the early career educator’s alleged conduct and “credibility issues.”

The lawyer presented on behalf of Noni Classen, the independent commissioner who oversees Manitoba’s new teacher registry, during a videoconference that took up much of the day.

The United States will remain Canada’s largest trading partner for the foreseeable future, and no amount of diplomatic travel or new trade agreements will change that basic reality.

But there is also nothing wrong with Canada looking for more customers.

Killer makes ‘amends with his maker

Dean Pritchard 3 minute read Yesterday at 8:54 PM CDT

A Winnipeg man, who once faced two counts of first-degree murder for slayings that were three days apart, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for manslaughter.

Rory Shane Nash, 42, entered a guilty plea to the lesser charge in the Feb. 1, 2023 killing of Lee James Boulette.

Nash was also one of four people arrested in the killing of Carl George Wescoupe three days earlier at the Manwin Hotel on Main Street. Prosecutors later stayed the first-degree murder charge against Nash due to insufficient evidence.

Nash co-operated with prosecutors in both cases, but ultimately did not testify in court, Crown attorney Brent Davidson told provincial court Judge Margaret Wiebe at a sentencing hearing Tuesday.
