Big picture

The schedule is still dotted with potholes and land mines, but credit the Jets for coming out of the All-Star break rested, invigorated and with some oomph to their game. A critical win in Tampa — just the second time this season the club has posted back-to-back W’s on the road this season — keeps the Jets hovering near the Eastern Conference playoff line. They’ve answered the bell in two games this week, but now comes a huge test: winning the second of games on back-to-back nights, something the club has failed at in eight tries this season.

Little picture

The Jets pick up a point on the Lightning, moving five points ahead of them after snapping their five-game win streak. More importantly, they are within four points of eighth-place Toronto, two behind ninth-place Washington and three back of Southeast Division leaders Florida.

Game-breaker

It’s not too difficult to make the call here: Kyle Wellwood’s dramatic OT winner sent the Jets leaping off their bench in celebration. Winnipeg is now 5-6 in OT games this season.

Free Press ★★★

★ Ondrej Pavelec, G, Winnipeg — The Lightning came at the Jets in waves at times, but the Jets’ last line of defence was outstanding, kicking out 30 of the 31 shots he faced.

★★ Blake Wheeler, F, Winnipeg — Picked up a goal and an assist on Wellwood’s winner. Playing bigger and with confidence.

★★★ Victor Hedman, D, Tampa Bay — Toyed with picking Dustin Byfuglien here, but Hedman scored the Bolts’ only goal while logging just under 21 minutes in a solid effort.
