The club announced the signing of non-import safety Brady Browne this afternoon. The 28-year-old from Maple Ridge, B.C. was scheduled to become a free agent next week, but elected to return to Winnipeg after a lost 2011 season.

Browne, who joined the Bombers in 2009 following a trade with Saskatchewan, suffered a torn bicep in the regular season opener in Hamilton and only returned to action for the East Final and Grey Cup.

The former University of Manitoba Bison registered one special teams tackle in the championship loss to B.C.

“Not only does Brady excel at the special teams aspect of the game, but he also gives us great depth at the safety position,” Bombers GM Joe Mack said in a statement. “We’re happy to have him back in Winnipeg.”

“I’m looking forward to returning to Winnipeg healthy and do my part to get the Blue Bombers back to the Grey Cup game,” added Browne.

Winnipeg still has eight players who can become free agents on the Feb. 15 deadline, including quarterback Alex Brink, offensive lineman Brendon LaBatte, and receiver Greg Carr.

The Bombers also announced the signing of Canadian running back Anthony Woodson today.

The 24-year-old was originally drafted by the Bombers in the fourth round (29th overall) in the 2010 CFL college draft, but elected to remain at the University of Calgary to finish the final two years of his CIS eligibility.

Last season with the Dinos, the 6-foot, 210-pound running back rushed 82 times for 488 yards and two touchdowns as he shared the backfield with two other players. He was named to the Canadian squad that participated at the 2011 Senior Men’s World Championship, but missed the tournament because of injury.
