Penguins 8 / Jets 5

at Consol Energy Center

Big picture

The Jets made a very big mess out of a very good opportunity to win all three games in their week. In losing a 60-minute shootout, the Jets remained stuck on 58 points while those around them gained traction, in particular Southeast Division-leading Florida, which pulled ahead by five points with a 3-1 win over New Jersey.

Little picture

Odd-man rushes and pretty plays excited the Penguins and their fans, as Evgeni Malkin had five points (1G, 4A) and Chris Kunitz had four (1G, 3A). Winnipeg had two-point days from Tim Stapleton, back after nine games on the injured reserve list, Bryan Little, Blake Wheeler and Dustin Byfuglien but none of that was a match for the skilled Penguins.

Game-breaker

Pick either of the not-so-great-Dustin Byfuglien moments in the second period. Byfuglien’s charge to the Penguins net left him caught midway through the period, creating the two-on-one goal for Kris Letang to make it 4-2. Or, late in the period, Byfuglien wasn’t able to change quickly with Ron Hainsey and his broken stick and Malkin exploited the pause to get into his breakaway position to score the 5-3 goal.

1 Evgeni Malkin, Pens. Five points, dynamic playmaking.

2 Chris Kunitz, Pens. Four points and oh, to bottle that chemistry with Malkin.

3 Kris Letang, Pens. Is back in form after a serious injury.
