RED DEER — Manitoba’s Jennifer Jones improved to 3-1 here at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts Monday afternoon with an 8-5 victory over Newfoundland’s Heather Strong.

Team Canada’s Amber Holland — who beat Jones in last year’s Canadian women’s championship final — is also 3-1 and that sets up nicely for tonight’s highly anticipated rematch between Jones and Holland. Canada faces Manitoba at 8:30 p.m. and TSN will broadcast the game live.

No biggie, says Jones.

“It really is just another round-robin game for us,” Jones said this afternoon after the win over Newfoundland. “We haven’t really thought about last year. We were really happy with the week we had in Charlottetown and the year that we had last year.

“We won the Players Championship to end the year and we never left that year feeling like we missed out on something. It’s another round-robin game and we just want to keep the momentum going and come out, play well and hopefully have a shot to win.”

The two teams head into tonight tied for second place in the Scotties standings behind only B.C.’s Kelly Scott, who has yet to be beaten at 4-0. Scott plays tonight against Nova Scotia’s Heather Smith-Dacey, who got her first win this afternoon in a 10-4 victory over Quebec’s Marie-France Larouche. Nova Scotia improved to 1-3, while Quebec is 2-3.

Jones needed only a bite of the eight-foot with her final rock of the third end to score a three-ender against Strong and take command of the game at 5-2.

In other scores Monday afternoon, Saskatchewan’s Michelle Englot dropped to 3-2 with an 8-7 loss to P.E.I.’s Kim Dolan (2-3), while New Brunswick’s Rebecca Atkinson is now 2-2 after an 8-6 win over N.W.T.’s Kerry Galusha, who is now 2-3.
