Lil’ Ed and the Blues

Friday, Times Change(d). Straight from Chicago comes Alligator Records artist and slide guitar wizard Lil’ Ed Williams and his band, the Blues Imperials, who have been together, in one form or another, since the mid-1970s, specializing in good-time party blues that should have our local juke joint jumping. Tickets are $25 at the club and Into the Music.

Glen Matlock

Saturday, Pyramid Cabaret. A double shot of first-generation punk rockers featuring ex-Stranglers frontman Hugh Cornwell and original Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock co-headlining a show that should feature plenty of old favourites along with solo material. Tickets are $16 at Kustom Kulture and Into the Music.

Islands

Saturday, West End Cultural Centre. Islands leader Nick Thorburn used a bad breakup as the inspiration for his band’s new album, A Sleep & A Forgetting, which seems to have led him on a soulful path where he wallows in his heartbreak on sombre ballads and sophisticated pop. Expect a bit of both Saturday. Tickets are $18.25 at Ticketmaster.

Straight No Chaser

Tuesday, Burton Cummings Theatre. Forget instruments: 10-man a cappella group Straight No Chaser prefer to make every sound on their own using just their voices. The group, which formed at the University of Indiana in 1996, specializes in pop and rock covers by the likes of Crowded House, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bon Jovi and Oasis. Tickets are $39.25 to $54.75 at Ticketmaster.
