SATURDAY, MARCH 17

MOON ALERT Avoid shopping or making important decisions from 8 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. After that, the moon moves from Capricorn into Aquarius.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Enjoy the last few days of this Pisces sun by giving yourself some solitude somewhere (preferably with a sunny patio and a great espresso bar) so you can ponder what you want your new year (birthday to birthday) to be all about. It’s easier to reach your goals if you define them.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Enjoy this time of increased popularity. Continue to accept all invitations and extend some to others. Join groups, clubs and organizations. Shmooze with others and share your hopes and dreams for the future with them. Why? Their feedback will help you!

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

You are still very much high viz with the sun at high noon in your chart. This great lighting flatters you, so make the most of it by demanding the advantage when dealing with bosses, parents, teachers and VIPs. They will bow to you.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Because you’re eager to learn and hungry for adventure, indulge yourself in some way. Travel if you can. Sign up for a course. Go to ethnic restaurants or visit places you’ve never been before. Be a tourist in your own city. (Send your family postcards from the other end of town.)

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Definitely give some serious effort (yes, the E word) to wrapping up loose details about taxes, debt, shared property, insurance matters, inheritances and wills. Just do it because it’s gotta be done. Then you can give yourself a nice little reward afterwards.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Respect your need for more sleep right now, because it’s a fact. The sun is still opposite your sign, as far away from you as it gets all year — and of course, the sun is your source of energy! Enjoy naps and more rest. (Find someone to cuddle.)

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Because you are virtually seized with a desire to improve your health and get better organized — act on this! Use this motivation. (It won’t always be there.) Make a list of dietary and exercise regimes as well as a list for cleaning up your act. Feels good, doesn’t it?

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Vacations, arts and crafts, romance, love affairs and playful times with children are all tops on your menu now. This is a fun time for Scorpios! Indulge your need to play and enjoy yourself. Very soon, you’ll be working hard. (Oh yeah.)

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Get as much done as possible while you’re so strongly focused on home, family and your domestic world. Of course, you also want to “hide” and relax at home, especially because family memories and discussions are giving you a lot to think about.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Press on! This accelerated pace is totally appropriate for you now. Short trips, errands, reading and writing plus increased time with siblings and neighbours keep your schedule jam-packed. Press on! This is not the time to dally at home.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

“The King was in the counting house counting out his money.” Your focus continues to be on cash flow, assets and your possessions. Perhaps you’re deciding what to keep and what to let go? You’re doing a financial inventory of your life.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

The sun is in your sign for a few more days so make the most of this! Whenever this happens (once a year) it’s your turn to recharge your batteries for the rest of the year. It also tends to attract people and favourable circumstances to you.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Rob Lowe (1964) shares your birthday. You express your feelings towards others in an almost tender way. You’re imaginative and multitalented. You do many things well. You’re also enthusiastic about life and your enthusiasm is contagious. People like to be around you. Personally, you’re a do-gooder and like to be involved in important causes. Study something important in the year ahead because you will value it.

Manitoba man lied about abduction: N.D. police

Scott Billeck 2 minute read Yesterday at 3:17 PM CDT

U.S. authorities say a Manitoba man falsely claimed he had been kidnapped and taken across the Canada-U.S. border over the weekend.

Roderick Garson, 37, is being held in a county jail near Alexandria, Minn., after he was arrested and charged with falsely reporting a crime.

The arrest stems from a report police received Saturday that a man had been abducted with a weapon in Manitoba and taken across the border into the United States.

The investigation led U.S. authorities to Alexandria, about two hours northwest of Minneapolis, where police located the reported victim and suspect after the latter ran into a local store claiming he had escaped from his 31-year-old unnamed captor.

Daycare, family centre addition will turn care home into intergenerational community hub

Maggie Macintosh 4 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 3:29 PM CDT

Seven-year-olds and 70-somethings will socialize daily when a 152-spot daycare opens inside of a seniors’ residence in Winnipeg in a couple of years.

Construction on a new wing of the Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre is scheduled to begin this fall, it was announced Monday.

The project won’t be complete for at least 22 months, but it’s already being touted as a made-in-Manitoba model for intergenerational community hubs across the country.

“It’s a real good idea to mix the younger generation with the older generation,” said Allan Rutherford, a 79-year-old resident of the 200-bed personal care home in Linden Ridge.

Officer who shot dog dead after it bit him won’t face charges

Scott Billeck 3 minute read Yesterday at 1:06 PM CDT

A Manitoba First Nations police officer will not face charges for fatally shooting a dog last year, despite the Crown describing the officer’s conduct as “concerning.”

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba announced it would not recommend charges Monday, more than a year after the incident was reported to the police watchdog.

A Manitoba First Nations Police Service officer went to a home in Swan Lake First Nation to make an arrest in June 2025, the IIU said. No arrest was made as the person police were looking for was not there. As the officer was leaving, a dog chained outside bit him.

The officer later returned with a carbine rifle and shot and killed the dog.

Trustees call for e-scooter safety education

Maggie Macintosh 3 minute read Yesterday at 6:00 AM CDT

School trustees are calling on the province to bolster public education around e-bike and e-scooter safety ahead of back-to-school season.

The Manitoba School Boards Association brought members’ concerns about a growing number of students using electronic devices to get to and from classes to the education minister’s office this month.

“There’s a concerning lack of safety knowledge on the part of Manitoba youth,” executive director Alan Campbell said.

Campbell, a long-time trustee in the Interlake School Division, resigned from elected office this summer to run the association that mobilizes school boards and provides them with labour relations support.
