YANNI, a self-taught Greek composer and musician celebrated for his lush, new-agey compositions and his psychedelic concert trappings, will be coming to Winnipeg in August on a tour through Western Canada.

Yanni and orchestra play the Centennial Concert Hall on Aug. 12 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the Winnipeg show are $78-$98 and go on sale to the general public March 23 at 10 a.m. Tickets are available online at www.ticketmaster.ca, or in person at all Ticketmaster outlets.

Yanni’s world tour commences April 17. On tour, Yanni and his orchestra will play favourites from throughout his career, as well as selections from his 2011 release Truth of Touch.

Driver, 62, killed in highway crash

One person was killed and a second was injured in a crash involving an SUV and semi-truck just outside Sanford on Tuesday morning.

RCMP said the semi-truck was eastbound on Highway 3 when it collided with the SUV, which was being driven south on Provincial Road 334 by a 62-year-old Sanford man, who died at the scene.

The collision happened shortly after 5 a.m.

Police said the semi-truck’s driver, a 58-year-old Morden man, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

With the recent resignation of its CEO Alan Danroth, Manitoba Hydro now has a chance for an overdue course correction. The propaganda spouted by its PR flaks notwithstanding, our Crown corporation has set a backward path to the era of fossil fuels, largely ignoring the rapid clean (and cheap) energy transition taking place around the globe.

MB Hydro has argued that spending $3 billion on new methane (aka natural) gas generating stations is the best way to meet rising peak-load power demands, and oh, by the way, don’t worry about rising carbon emissions because we’ll hardly ever use them. Just stop and think about that. We’re going to spend (at minimum) $3 billion for something we don’t intend to use very much.

That borders on absurdity.

The much more likely scenario is that as the inevitable electrification of the economy proceeds, in tandem with rising grid demands, those methane-gas power plants will be called into service more and more.

She cited the need to “urgently reimagine our partnerships” and “build global coalitions for our resilience and democracies” — a clear reference to the need for united action in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s ongoing disruption of previously solid relations among traditionally like-minded western democracies.
