PITTSBURGH, PA – It might be just five minutes, could be 10. But however much ice time Ben Maxwell gets/earns for the Winnipeg Jets tonight, he hopes to have enough impact to not only make a good impression, but keep the team’s playoff hopes alive.
The Jets have recalled the North Vancouver product from St. John’s to replace Nik Antropov, out with a lower-body injury, and Maxwell is to suit up tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
“It was a bit of a long day yesterday (travelling), but I feel good to go now and I’m ready for tonight,” said Maxwell Tuesday.
“I think I’ve just got to play my game. I feel like I’ve been playing well and I’m hoping to carry that over and help in any way I can to help this team win.
“It’s tough to play with a lower amount of minutes, but I’m getting used to that when I play up here. Hopefully tonight we can generate something with whatever time we have.”
Maxwell, 23, has eight goals and 14 assists in 36 games with the IceCaps and previously suited up with four games with the Jets and six with the Anaheim Ducks in the NHL this season.
He has 42 career NHL games under his belt with the Jets, Ducks, Atlanta and Montreal.
“They told me they just wanted me to play competitive like I have in the minors and just play hard,” Maxwell said.
“I’ll just play my game with as little nerves as possible. I’m just trying to focus on helping the guys get a win. Right now this is a competitive atmosphere and the guys really want to win. It’s going to be fun.”
