The anthems continue
New Jersey Springsteen-worshipping heartland-punk band the Gaslight Anthem gets fans ready for the release of its forthcoming album, Handwritten, with the release of the single 45, a melodic riff-rocker that features anthemic verses, vocal harmonies and a nod to the joys of playing records. The track is streaming at rollingstone.com and other sites.

My Big Fat … huh … ?
Nia Vardalos’s output as an actress has tended to innocent rom-coms (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) and more recently kids movies (American Girl). But her upcoming film, 33 Liberty Lane, shooting in Winnipeg this summer, is about women who start up their own phone sex biz. While we are happy to see Nia get raunchy, it will be interesting to see just how bawdy she can get on her home turf.

Cockburn: man in motion
In his new tour-retrospective documentary Bruce Cockburn: Pacing the Cage (Friday at 9 p.m. on Vision), the Canadian folk legend pretty much does it all — demonstrates the musical virtuosity and songwriting brilliance that have fuelled his 45-year career (and are showcased on his first live solo album, Slice o’ Life), speaks frankly about his faith and creative inspirations, and shares his love of performing and his constant yearning to be on the road. Offering tributes in this lovely hour-long film are Bono, Jackson Browne, Sylvia Tyson and others.

Landscape in his lens
Award-winning Winnipeg photographer Mike Grandmaison has a reputation for breathtaking, painterly images of the natural world. His fifth book, Mike Grandmaison’s Prairie and Beyond (Turnstone Press, $40) has its local launch Monday at 7:30 p.m. at McNally Robinson Booksellers. It’s a collection of striking landscape photos of the three Prairie provinces, ranging from desert dunes to the Northern Lights. Throughout May, McNally Robinson is also displaying prints by Grandmaison in its Prairie Ink Restaurant.

Steinbach-born Allison Hossack made her first appearance Sunday on AMC’s highly regarded American crime drama The Killing as Sally Ames, the wife of a philandering jet-setter suspected in the murder of Rosie Larsen. According to the show website’s suspect tracker, the Brandon University graduate, who broke into acting on the TV soap Another World and came home to appear in the local series Falcon Beach, is currently considered to be the killer by four per cent of viewers.
