Suspects in bike thefts charged, warrant issued for third suspect

Winnipeg Police have arrested an alleged bicycle thief whose activities attracted the attention of Free Press readers.

Three expensive mountain bikes were stolen Saturday from an apartment building in the 600-block of Mulvey Avenue. Free Press columnist Gordon Sinclair detailed the thefts in his June 12 column, describing how a witness took photos of the theft in action and the owners tracked the thieves to a nearby apartment block on Corydon and even found one of the bikes but police told them they’d be unlikely to get their bikes back.

Area residents told Sinclair that the thieves were operating a stolen-bike chop shop out of their apartment and there were plenty of bike parts on the premises.

Winnipeg police said today that an arrest was made Wednesday, following an investigation and a search warrant for the Corydon property.

Gregory Christen Robert, 33, has been charged with possessing property obtained by crime and breach of probation. He is being held in custody.

However, the bikes stolen Saturday were not recovered.

A second person was arrested Thursday and charged with theft under $5,000. He was released on a promise to appear in court.

An arrest warrant has been issued for a third suspect.

WPS spokeswoman Patrol Sgt. Monica Stothers said police do not believe a bike chop shop was being operated from the Corydon location.
