The streets in Winnipeg’s concert, theatre and museum district will get a facelift that includes lighting that reacts to voices, clapping and movement.

The city is spending $2.5 million on the first phase of the streetscaping project in the cultural district, starting on Market Avenue. It will include new benches, wider sidewalks, better signage and new interactive light features nestled in the trees.

The cash is coming mostly from the proceeds from the sale of the Winnipeg Square parkade. More money will be needed next year for the next phase of streetscaping down Rorie Street.
