WINNIPEG — Chris Killmer of Bellingham, Wash., won the Players Cup today on the fourth playoff hole, taking the top prize in the Canadian Tour event at Pine Ridge.

Killmer scored his first tour win, and the $24,000 first prize, outlasting Philadelphia native Vince Covello.

The two players started the day tied at 13-under par and each shot two-under 69 today, most of their strokes in the pouring rain.

But Covello had to rally from three shots back after 12 holes today, and did so with birdies at Nos. 13, 15 and 17 to force the first playoff at the Manitoba tour event since 1989.

“I made him make birdies and that’s what he did,” Killmer, 25, said after the win. “He’s a great player. Was I surprised he did it? No. I thought he was going to make a charge. My hat’s off to him, he’s a great player. Showed a lot of heart down the stretch.”

Killmer eventually won the day with a par four on the fourth extra hole after the players played Nos. 18, 18, 17 and 18.

Despite his three-putt bogey from 40 feet that opened the door for Killmer’s winning par, Covello said he doesn’t like Pine Ridge any less.

“I love this place,” he said. “I love the people here. You get a lot of support from the fans that came out and I’ve got a great caddy (Curtis Cross). We’re a good team. I’ll look forward to coming back in the future if I can’t progress up the ranks and get on a higher level tour.”
