Sarah Kim

Sarah Kim, a makeup artist, film studies major and dentistry student at the University of Manitoba, is busy but finds time to search for eclectic and vintage items online at websites like etsy.com. The website offers affordable clothing and different looks that can be modified into your own personal style. Her colourful clothing choices are bold; having worked in makeup, Kim likes to express colour and pattern in her wardrobe. Her simple, black high-waisted shorts give her an hourglass silhouette that balances out the quirky colour combo she pulls off so well.

She is no stranger to style, having interned in Hollywood for her film studies classes. Kim’s focus is now dentistry, getting all her prerequisites to one day work overseas.

What she wore…

Shirt — “My shirt is from Superstore, Joe.”

Tights — “My mom got them for me, so they’re probably from The Bay.”

Did your mom know you would like maroon tights?

“Yeah I wore an old pair of hers before and they got ruined so she just got me another pair.”

Shorts — “The shorts are from Urban Outfitters.”

Watch — “It’s from The Bay, Marc by Marc Jacobs.”

Coat — “Club Monaco here in Winnipeg; I used to work there.”

Loafers — “These are from etsy.com online — they’re vintage.”

Purse — “Purse is from Korea. It was like 20 bucks in the subway.”

Glasses — “They’re from Korea as well. I lived there for a year and four months. I taught English and then stayed a little while after.”

Were you born in Canada?

“Yeah, I was born in Winnipeg. When I went to Korea, it was my first time really experiencing it and it was amazing. Their style is so fashion-forward and affordable. My trip really influenced my style. I feel like they know what’s up in the fashion industry and they have it on hand quicker then we can here in Canada so it’s more accessible.”

Fashion essential

“Probably my tops more than anything. A lot of my bottoms are more basic but my tops are patterned and colourful. These shorts are just simple but help the top stand out.”

Style inspiration

“In general I like vintage shopping because I think they are great finds and I like how you can modify things to your own style. I usually look online at etsy.com, which sells second-hand or vintage clothing. It’s about making it your own once you get it. That’s where I find my unique items.”

Coming from a fashion-forward country like Korea, does your family inspire you?

“Naturally, I think my dad probably does. He’s a go-getter and very ambitious. He always tries to know what’s in trend and so I think that influenced me and taught me how to present myself. He’s a dental surgeon so he wears sophisticated looks; he’s always trying to be prim and proper but still have something that stands out a little bit.”

Fashion tip

“My body type is really straight so having high-waisted clothing has been really beneficial for me, because it gives me more shape in the right areas. When it comes to colour, make sure it goes with your skin tone and that the undertones of your skin work with the colour. I’m also a makeup artist and I like to wear orange lipstick. I know a lot of girls are scared of that but if it works with your skin tone you can get away with anything.”
