Resident charged in ‘Murder Mansion’ beating death

A resident of ‘Murder Mansion’ on Balmoral Street has been charged in the beating death of Ron McKinnon, the city’s third homicide of the year.

Robert Steward Maier, 38, has been charged with manslaughter.

McKinnon, 54,  was found beaten to death late Tuesday afternoon in the Balmoral Street rooming house. It is believe McKinnon was attacked the day before and died, alone, from his injuries, police said.

McKinnon had been at a party at another suite in the rooming house Monday night when he was attacked, police said.

Other residents helped McKinnon back to his suite, but left him there. He was found dead by another resident Tuesday afternoon.

An autopsy concluded that McKinnon had been beaten to death.

Police said that Maier was arrested Thursday afternoon in the 500-block of Notre Dame Avenue.

He remains in custody.

The Balmoral Street rooming house is known to neighbours as Murder Mansion because in the past two other homicides were committed there.
