Cameron name back on Bombers roster

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have put a legendary name back on their roster — and it comes attached to a fresh new face.

On Wednesday, the club announced it had signed Winnipeg punter Brett Cameron, 22, to his first professional deal. Cameron is the son of legendary Blue Bombers punter Bob Cameron, who played 23 seasons in blue and gold between 1980 and 2002.

Cameron will come into training camp ready to challenge Bomber punter Mike Renaud for work. “Brett is a prospect with great potential at the professional level,” Bomber general manager Joe Mack said in a release. “When it is the right fit, it is always appealing to have local talent within your organization, and we look forward to Brett coming in and competing in our training camp.”

Cameron, a St. Paul’s High School alumnus, graduated from the University of North Dakota in December. In his four seasons at UND — including three as a starter — Cameron earned a career punting average of 40.6, tied for second best in the college’s history.

“This is something I’ve been dreaming about since I was a little kid,” Cameron said, noting that he has gotten to know Renaud and has “a lot to learn” from the All-Star punter.

And as far as advice from his father? “His message has just always been to work hard,” Cameron said. “And that would be the best advice you can get. Without putting in time and effort, you’re never going to get those opportunities.”
