Forty-three years after clutching the first of his back-to-back world curling championships, Winnipeg’s Don Duguid will see his name etched into the World Curling Hall of Fame.

On Tuesday, the organization announced that Duguid, 78, and Alberta skip Ron Northcott, 77, will be formally inducted into the hall on April 7, during the closing ceremonies of the Ford World Men’s Curling Championship in Victoria, B.C.

“Going in with Ron Northcott really tickles me,” Duguid said in a release. “He was an inspiration to me when I watched him curl.”

Northcott captured three world championships during his career, skipping alongside lead Fred Storey and second Bernie Sparkes in 1966 (with third George Fink), 1968 (with third Jim Shields) and 1969, when he brought third Dave Gerlach.

The year after Northcott’s last championship, Duguid and his team – third Rod Hunter, second Jim Pettapiece and lead Bryan Wood – rolled through the world championships, going 8-0 in Utica, New York in 1970 and 9-0 in France the very next year.

After retiring from curling, Duguid worked as a broadcaster for CBC and NBC. In 1974, he was inducted into the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame, and Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame honoured his name in 1991.
