MOVING up the depth chart, Max Hall acknowledged Thursday he’s now just one play, not two, from getting his hands on the ball for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

But the backup quarterback was not overselling how much closer he is now that Justin Goltz has been promoted ahead of veteran Buck Pierce as the Bombers’ starting pivot.

“I think it feels the same,” Hall said, asked about Thursday’s practice specifically. “I think it’ll start feeling different when we start winning football games. That’s when it’ll start feeling different. Right now, we’ve lost three in a row, right? We need to get wins. I wouldn’t say we’re panicking, but I’d say everybody has a little more urgency, know we’ve got to pay attention to the details and get a win.”

Hall, who was signed this spring, has yet to take a snap in a regular-season game and continues to say he’s solely focused on improvement and his learning curve.

In that respect, he said having Pierce around, even if he’s not the starter, is a valuable resource, including as a mentor.

“Buck’s really good at it,” Hall said. “He’s played in this league a long time. He knows the ins and outs. He knows how to read defences and he’s a great guy to have as a mentor.

“I think he’ll keep doing that, because that’s the kind of guy he is… a team guy. I’m lucky to be around him.”

Offensive co-ordinator Gary Crowton said Thursday that Pierce’s experience can be a factor in the future.

“Obviously, you’re going to miss all the leadership and experience Buck has,” Crowton said. “Those are things that I really appreciated as a coach. He’s kind of helped me learn the CFL and I’m counting on him to help these young guys as they get more and more experience on a daily basis.”

Crowton said the new pecking order is best for the team overall.

“If we keep moving forward with Goltz and Max Hall and we have Buck, then we end up with three really good quarterbacks, and that will put us in the position that if there is any kind of injury, then we can move forward,” Crowton said.

“Buck has experience, Max Hall is an outstanding player too, because he played in the NFL and is a great passer. And now you have Goltz, who is throwing the ball well and has mobility.”
