Gang members sentenced to 11 years for jail slaying

Five Winnipeg street gang members were each sent to prison for 11 years today after jointly pleading guilty to manslaughter for the jailhouse beating death of an inmate.

Tyler St. Paul, 21, died at the Milner Ridge Correctional Institute after being subjected to a vicious attack committed at the behest of a Most Organized Brothers (MOB) gang leader.

St. Paul, also an MOB member, had signalled he wished to leave the gang to join up with a rival gang, Court of Queen’s Bench Chief Justice Glenn Joyal was told.

His defection came with a price, however: he had to be “beaten out” of the MOB, court heard.

Eight of the gang’s members snuck into St. Paul’s cell on May 16, 2011 and took turns physically assaulting him while pinning his legs and arms down and covering his face with a pillow.

Daniel Dumas, 21, Eric Plante, 22, Eriberto Soldat, 20, and Brent Houle, 21, admitted today they were among seven who physically committed the assault which resulted in St. Paul’s death.

Emile Williams, 25, was the ranking MOB member who gave the order to have St. Paul “De-boarded,” Crown attorney Keith Eyrikson said. Williams also pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

The intent was to beat, not kill, the victim, court heard.

Three other accused have also pleaded guilty. Two remain to be sentenced.
