A 12-year-old boy was arrested in connection with a fire that occurred Tuesday inside a culvert that carries Truro Creek below Portage Avenue.

The blaze, which caused the closure of Portage Avenue between Lyle Street and Ferry Road, was deliberately set and quickly spread to the foam and poly lining inside the culvert. Some nearby businesses were evacuated while fire crews extinguished the fire. No injuries were reported.

Damage is estimated at $500,000. The 12-year-old male was arrested Tuesday afternoon at a nearby school and faces charges of arson causing damage to property and possession of incendiary material. He was released on a promise to appear in court.
