Trojans top Crusaders in junior varsity high school football championship

The Vincent Massey Trojans triumphed over the St. Paul’s Crusaders 27-19 on Thursday night to claim the Winnipeg High School Football League’s junior varsity championship.

Although the game was scoreless for most of the first half, the Crusaders cracked the scoreboard with just over one minute left in the first quarter, as pivot Riley Naujoks ran the ball into the Trojans’ zone. The Crusaders kicker missed on the convert, though, and the Vincent Massey team pushed back immediately.

The Trojans scored on the next possession when receiver Abdul Gasama caught a pass and carried it into the Crusaders’ house. The convert was good to give Vincent Massey a 7-6 lead going into the break.

In the second half, the teams traded scores, with the Crusaders taking the lead on a Naujoks throw to Morgan Wokes. But Trojans running back Matthew Marion pushed back after that, turning in two second-half touchdowns to vault the Trojans ahead.

The Crusaders almost tied it up in the dying minutes of the fourth on a touchdown run from running back Lahai Amara, but an attempted quarterback plunge for the two-point convert was stuffed to keep them trailing 19-20. The Vincent Massey team then put the game away with just over a minute left to go on Marion’s third touchdown of the night, a 22-yard run.
