CRAIG HEISINGER has always had a knack for finding players who may have slipped under hockey’s radar. And it seems the higher ups at Hockey Canada have noticed.
Hockey Canada announced Wednesday that Heisinger, the Winnipeg Jets’ senior vice-president, director of hockey operations/assistant general manager has been named to the management staff for Canada’s national men’s team participating in the 2013 Spengler Cup.
“It should be an interesting challenge and certainly another experience, so I’m looking forward to it,” said Heisinger. “I’ve had experience with Hockey Canada in the past in my previous life as an equipment guy and so I’m looking forward to trying my hand at doing it at the management level.”
Hockey Canada announced the Spengler Cup head coach will be Doug Shedden, who returns after guiding Canada to a 7-2 win over host HC Davos in last year’s title game while longtime Swiss League coach Serge Pelletier will serve as an assistant.
Joining Heisinger — who worked with Team Canada on two previous occasions as the equipment manager at the 1997 IIHF World Championship and the 1998 Olympics — on the management staff will be Phoenix Coyotes assistant GM Brad Treliving and Brad Pascall, Hockey Canada vice-president of hockey operations/national teams.
Canada’s entry will be made up primarily of Canadians playing pro hockey in Europe, but also could tap into players in the American Hockey League. It’s here where Heisinger’s knowledge — he is also the GM of the St. John’s IceCaps — could be invaluable.
“We have some work to do, especially at the forward group,” said Heisinger.
“But between myself and Brad Treliving and Brad Pascall with Hockey Canada and our coach Doug Shedden we’ll work diligently to put the best group we can together.”
The 2013 Spengler Cup will take place Dec. 26-31 in Davos, Switzerland and will mark the 30th year that Canada participates in the Spengler Cup.
Canada, which has won the Spengler Cup 12 times since first participating in 1984, will play in a group that includes the host team, HC Davos and HC Vitkovice Steel from the Czech Republic.
Swiss side HC Geneve-Servette, CSKA Moscow from Russia and the AHL’s Rochester Americans will play in the other group.
