KAMLOOPS — Manitoba’s Jeff Stoughton is the last remaining undefeated team here at the 2014 Tim Hortons Brier.
Stoughton improved to 3-0 Sunday afternoon with a 7-6 extra end win over NWT’s Jamie Koe.
The Manitoba win coupled with a 7-4 win by Quebec over previously undefeated B.C. means Stoughton will head into a game versus New Brunswick’s James Grattan Sunday night as the only team yet to be beaten this week.
And that’s unlikely to change tonight. New Brunswick has looked hopeless here, losing their first two games by scores of 13-5 and 10-1.
Stoughton, on the other hand, has been doing just enough to win. While Manitoba hasn’t been dominating — two of their wins have been in an extra end and the other came down to a last rock in the tenth end — they’re still winning while playing less than their best.
“It’s great. The best part about it is we know we can play a heck of a lot better than that,” Stoughton said after the win over NWT. “We struggled with the speed this afternoon. It was definitely a lot faster and there was a lot more curl… We were just missing too many draws heavy today. But we finally got it together late in the game.”
Manitoba led 4-2 heading into the fifth end break but Stoughton flashed a thin double attempt with the last rock of the seventh end to give Koe a steal of 2 and a 5-4 lead at that point. But Stoughton battled back with a deuce in the ninth end, held NWT to a game-tying single in the 10th end and needed nothing more than a draw to the 8-foot in the extra to secure the victory.
There are four teams tied for second a win behind Manitoba at 2-1 heading into Sunday night — Ontario, Quebec, B.C. and Saskatchewan.
