THE Crimean referendum results that showed overwhelming support to split from Ukraine and join Russia should be thrown out, says a prominent member of Manitoba’s Ukrainian community.
There were no impartial international observers on hand to ensure a fair and transparent voting process, said Oksana Bondarchuk, president of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Manitoba Provincial Council.
“The Russian propaganda machine is working overtime to ensure their message is being heard loud and clear. You’ve got a country (Russia) that is practically a fascist state. (President Vladimir) Putin has a one-party system. The opposition is perpetually being jailed. The media is state-owned and journalists are beaten up and jailed,” she said.
“There are very strong similarities between Hitler and Putin. When the world wakes up to this, I hope it’s not too late.”
There should be sanctions against Russian businesses, Bondarchuk said.
“I want to see hockey visas for Russian hockey players (who play in North America) cancelled,” she said.
