Winnipeg police have caught up with a murder suspect they’ve been hunting for weeks in connection with the city’s first homicide of 2014.

Justin Atelard Catcheway, 30, is in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre today charged with second-degree murder of Justin Desmarais.

On Jan. 19 at about 3 p.m., Desmarais, 24, was found dead in a home located on the 200 block of Andrews Street.

Police believe an argument took place in the house the day before but have said little else about their investigation.

Catcheway is also accused of uttering threats to a woman on the day Desmarais died, court records show.

The North End rooming house in which Desmarais was found was known for drug-related activity. He didn’t live there, police said.

Police obtained a Canada-wide warrant for Catcheway’s arrest after he was identified as a suspect. Twice in recent weeks, they issued public pleas for help finding him.

Police said they believe he’s an associate of the Manitoba Warriors street gang.

Police have not yet commented on the arrest. It’s believed he was nabbed late Friday or early Saturday morning.
